The Pitfall of Pure Black (#000000)

Novice designers often set dark mode backgrounds to pure #000000 and text to pure #ffffff. This extreme 21:1 contrast ratio produces visual halation and eye strain. Premium enterprise design systems (like Apple, Linear, and The Digital Mart) utilize deep tinted slate and zinc tones (e.g. #09090b and #18181b).

Layered Depth with Ambient Elevation

In dark themes, you cannot use drop shadows to indicate elevation because black shadows are invisible against dark backgrounds. Instead, elevation is communicated through progressive surface lightness:

  • Base Layer (Canvas): #000000 or #09090b
  • Middle Layer (Cards): #18181b with 1px border rgba(255,255,255,0.1)
  • Elevated Layer (Modals/Popovers): #27272a with subtle top edge highlight.
